James Lyng Adult Education Centre Hosts Inspiring Literacy Fair: “Chart Your Course”
Montreal, May 27, 2025- On April 30, James Lyng Adult Education Centre came alive with stories, poetry, and the transformative power of literacy during its annual Literacy Fair, an event that celebrated not only reading and writing but the deeper journey of navigating life through language.
Organized by Tina Spiridigliozzi (Principal), Jorge Quiroga (Andragogical Consultant), and Steven Valade (Reclaim Program Manager), the fair embraced the theme “Chart Your Course: Navigating Life with Literacy.” The Center was beautifully decorated by Ms. Laura Greco, who creatively brought the nautical theme to life with banners, signage, and interactive displays. The fair featured literacy stations, giveaways, and a welcoming space for students to explore new reading materials and resources
The event began with a student assembly where acclaimed Montreal poet Greg Santos read from one of his works, offering powerful reflections on themes of identity and belonging. “His poems about refugees deeply resonated with our diverse student body,” shared one teacher. Following Mr. Santos, James Lyng’s own teacher, Sam Krymalowski took the stage with co-author Sean Kropveld, to read from their co-written novel, “The man who came to rent”, inspiring students to see the potential of their own voices in print. “This fair is about more than books,” said Mr. Quiroga. “It’s about empowerment. Literacy is a right and a tool for transformation.”
In keeping with the spirit of community, Reclaim provided free pizza for all students and brought in volunteers to assist with activities and booths. “Providing food is a simple gesture, but it goes a long way in making students feel welcomed and valued. When people gather around a meal, it creates a sense of community—and that’s what literacy is all about: connecting people, said Mr. Valade.
Ms. Spiridigliozzi, who spearheaded the planning, personally collected books from generous donors all over Montreal to distribute at the event. “Every book represents a new direction someone can take in life,” she said. “It’s been heartwarming to see how many people contributed to this cause.”
The event was also honored by the presence of Rick David, Assistant Director of AEVS (Adult Education and Vocational Services), who spent time speaking with students and staff. His attendance underscored the importance the EMSB places on literacy as a foundational skill for lifelong learning. Media personality Mark Bergman from Inspiration News covered the event, capturing the energy and excitement of the day in a video and upcoming feature article.
The James Lyng Literacy Fair stood as a testament to what community, compassion, and creativity can achieve together. In the words of Ms. Spiridigliozzi: “When we give students access to books, ideas, and encouragement, we help them navigate life with confidence and purpose.”
The day was a resounding success thanks to the dedication of staff, volunteers, and community partners.
