Dunrae Gardens Sustainability Fair to take on a Shark Tank-style format June 17

Montreal, June 2, 2025- In an era where sustainability is more important than ever, students at Dunrae Gardens Elementary School in Town of Mount Royal, in collaboration with professors and students from HEC Montréal and Dawson College, are stepping up to make a difference. Through the Sustainable Development Program, young minds are being introduced to the core principles of sustainability while addressing social, environmental, and economic challenges in a meaningful way. 

This year-long initiative fosters creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork, equipping students with the tools to develop real-world solutions for pressing global issues. The program will culminate on Tuesday, June 17 (9:30 am)   with a Sustainability Fair, which will take the form of an exciting Shark Tank-style event.  At the Fair, students will pitch a sustainable business or a sustainable technological solution to a panel of expert judges.  


The Sustainable Development Program is structured around two dynamic streams, each designed to develop specific skills and address different aspects of sustainability. Students who selected the Sustainable Business stream are participating in the Sustainable Business Design Challenge, where they identify a sustainability issue, develop a business plan to address it, create a prototype of a sustainable business/organization, and learn about social entrepreneurship and sustainable business models. Through the Data Storytelling and Engineering Challenge, participants in the STEAM stream prototype innovative technology solutions using game design or microcomputing. They apply foundational concepts from areas such as data analysis, green energy, and artificial intelligence to address real-world environmental sustainability challenges. 

Throughout the program, Grade 6 students have been coached on creating professional presentations and delivering compelling business pitches. 

Via a recent dress-down day and bake sale funds were raised to provide   monetary grants to  top student projects.

Assistant Director of Educational Services Athina Galanogeorgos to retire

Athina Galanogeorgos, Assistant Director of Educational Services, has announced she will retire. Her last day of work will be Nov. 21. The Association Québécoises des Cadres scolaires wishes to extend best wishes. Athina’s journey began when she and her parents emigrated from Greece while she was still a toddler. She quickly adapted to her new environment, learning English by watching television and becoming the family's interpreter at a young age. Her parents instilled in her a strong work ethic and a love for learning and education. They frequently read with her and filled their home with books she still treasures to this day. She has fond memories of attending Barclay Elementary School, where she was inspired by caring teachers who nurtured her love for learning. She went on to graduate from Malcolm Campbell High School and pursued her passion for languages and cultures at Vanier College, becoming fluent in both Italian and German. EMSB to recognize Volunteers of Distinction and present Lifetime Achievement Award

Montreal, April 16, 2025 - On the occasion of National Volunteer Week,  which will be marked from April 27 to May 3, the English Montreal School Board will hold a special  reception and ceremon to honour two Volunteers of Distinction, as well as the presentation of the  Lifetime  Achievement Award.   The program will take place at the  St. Pius X Career Centre (9955 Papineau) in Ahuntsic on Tuesday, April 29   where the honourees, their families, EMSB commissioners, management, in-school administrators and Parents Committee executive members will be treated  to dinner catered by the culinary students. This will be followed by an awards ceremony  streamed live on the EMSB website.  A special guest for the evening was Tyson Philpot, the star wide receiver for the Montreal Alouettes who is excited to see the St. Pius X culinary students at work.
