Carlyle Elementary School's IB Primary Years Program Learning Celebration

Written by Alena Hamlett

Town of Mount Royal, April 7, 2026- This year, Carlyle Elementary School in TMR held its annual IB Primary Years Program (PYP) Learning Celebration on Thursday, March 26, 2026. The evening marked an important milestone for the Grade 6 students: the IB PYP Exhibition.

For students, teachers, and families, this special event was the culmination of the students’ learning journey in the Primary Years Program. The PYP Exhibition is an opportunity for students to bring together everything they have learned over the years and show what it means to be thoughtful, responsible, and engaged learners. At the heart of the Exhibition is student agency—students take ownership of their learning, explore issues that matter to them, and share their understanding with the wider school community.Over the past several months, students worked collaboratively and with great dedication to investigate real-world issues. Guided by the transdisciplinary theme Sharing the Planet, they explored the central idea: Human activity can affect and change the world.

Their inquiries covered a wide range of meaningful topics, including:

Ocean health

Equity and access to basic needs

The impact of war

Zoos and sanctuaries

Global warming

Deforestation

Overconsumption

The ethical treatment of animals

Natural disasters

Throughout the process, students were challenged to think critically, reflect deeply, and apply the knowledge and skills they had developed over the years at Carlyle. The Exhibition not only showcased their learning but also celebrated their growth as PYP learners.

An important part of the Exhibition is taking meaningful action. This year, each student committed to one realistic and purposeful step they can take to make a positive difference in the world or in their community. These actions included reducing plastic use, conserving resources, showing kindness, and raising awareness about important issues.

These commitments were shared through a collective pledge display, which will be revisited over time to remind students that small, consistent actions can lead to meaningful and lasting change.

As part of their inquiry, each group also created an artwork that represented their understanding of the topic. These pieces were thoughtfully designed using recycled materials collected from home, school, and the Concordia Reuse Centre. This creative process encouraged students to think sustainably as they transformed discarded materials into meaningful expressions of learning.

In addition, this year’s graduating class participated in a collaborative artistic experience. With the guidance of Ms. Emily Read through the ArtistsInspire grant, students co-created a large-scale installation inspired by their shared learning.

Driven by student ideas, parents were invited to visit the sensory room, where they entered a tunnel into a world that explored the journey of sharing our planet and discovering pathways toward a more peaceful future.  By the end of the evening, students demonstrated a unique understanding of their chosen topics by confidently educating and engaging their audiences.

This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication and support of the staff, mentors, and administration at Carlyle Elementary School.
